Inquest examining Gloria Assin's death set

A mandatory inquest has been announced into the circumstances surrounding the death of 42-year-old Gloria Assin who died in custody.

KENORA -- A mandatory inquest has been announced into the circumstances surrounding the death of Gloria Assin.

The 42-year-old died on Sept. 23, 2012 while a backseat passenger, in custody, in an Ontario Provincial Police vehicle in Kenora.

The inquest is expected to last up to one week and to hear from approximately 12 witnesses. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2017 at the Ontario Court of Justice, 216 Water St., Kenora. Dr. Michael Wilson will preside as inquest coroner and Nicole Stortini and Julian Roy will be counsel to the coroner.
