THUNDER BAY – An inquest into the 2015 death of Timothy Elliott at the Thunder Bay District Jail is scheduled to begin on Monday.

Elliott died at 42 while in custody and Dr. David Cameron, regional supervising coroner for inquests, said the inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

It’s expected to last eight days, with approximately eight witnesses being called. Its goal is to examine the circumstances surrounding Elliott’s death, and the jury may or may not make recommendations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The hearing was initially scheduled to begin on May 4, but was pushed back because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hearing, to be presided over by inquest coroner Dr. Michael Wilson, will be held by video conference and the main boardroom will be closed to visitors for health and safety reasons. The public may watch the proceedings on YouTube.
