An inquest will be held into the death of a man who was being held in custody in Thunder Bay, the area’s supervising coroner confirmed Monday.

Michael Wilson, Regional Supervising Coroner for North Region, announced that an inquest will be held on Feb. 7 into the death of Christopher Coaster.

The 29-year-old died while in custody at the Thunder Bay jail. Because of this, an inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding the man’s death, and a jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths from taking place in the future.

The inquest is expected to last about five days, and will hear from about a dozen witnesses. The inquest begins at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 7, at the government building at 189 Red River Rd. in Thunder Bay.
