THUNDER BAY -- A coroner's inquest into the 2017 death of Moses Beaver has been scheduled for later this year.

The province on Friday announced the inquest, which is expected to hear from 27 witnesses over 15 days, will be held at the Thunder Bay Courthouse beginning in November.

The 56-year-old Beaver, an Indigenous artist from Nibinamik First Nation, died on Feb. 13, 2017 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after he was transferred from the Thunder Bay District Jail. A news release from the Ontario government announcing the inquest said Beaver had been experiencing mental health issues prior to going into custody.

Three days later, Mary Wabasse, Beaver's sister, died in a crash on Highway 102 on her way to Thunder Bay for her brother's funeral.

Dr. Louise McNaughton will preside as inquest coroner. Julian Roy and Robert Kozak will serve as coroner's counsel.
