THUNDER BAY — A coroner's inquest that will examine the circumstances of a man's death in police custody nine years ago is set to take place next month.
The province on Monday announced that the inquest into the death of Emmanuel Oruitemeka is scheduled to start on July 4.
Oruitemeka, 25, died in hospital on Feb. 16, 2014 after collapsing four days earlier while in police custody in Thunder Bay.
The inquest had previously been scheduled to take place in 2019, but it ended up being postponed. It was further delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The province said the inquest is expected to last seven days and could hear from 14 witnesses.
Dr. Bob Reddoch will be the presiding coroner.
