THUNDER BAY -- A trio of local organizations are using International Women's Day to honour 100 women from across the country next month.
Faye Peterson House, Thunder Bay Counselling Centre and Catholic Family Development Centre are partnering up to host a trivia night April 7, with questions about 100 women from the local community and Canada.
"And to bring awareness and empowerment to women in our generation and the next," counselling centre executive director Nancy Chamberlain said Tuesday morning.
Faye Peterson director Debbie Zweep said the night, which will be held at the Slovak Legion, is a chance to put women front and centre.
While the event will be fun, Zweep said International Women's Day is about celebrating women but also remembering that there is still a long way to go before equality is achieved.
The trivia night will also be a fundraiser in part to help the organization as it builds second stage housing. Currently Faye Peterson offers crisis housing. The new project would allow women to stay with the organization for another two years.
"Numbers consistently rise among violence against women in this community, around violence period in this community," she said.
Chamberlain agreed that the day is about celebration but awareness of the work to be done.
"We must never forget that we still have a long way to go," she said.
"If we keep women's issues in the shadows we'll never be able to do something about that."
