THUNDER BAY - The Special Investigations Unit is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 29-year-old man while in custody of the Thunder Bay Police Service.
According to a SIU media release, officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service received a call regarding an individual’s well-being on Feb. 28.
Officers attended a residence at approximately 11 a.m. along with EMS and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.
The 29-year-old man was taken into custody and transported to hospital for treatment. The next day, while still in hospital, the man became critically ill and he was pronounced dead on March 8.
A post-mortem examination was conducted in Toronto on Thursday.
According to the SIU, three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
Anyone with information that could assist in this investigation is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529. Anyone with video evidence related to the event is also asked to upload it via the SIU website.
The SIU is called into investigate anytime there is a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault involving police in the province.
