THUNDER BAY - The death of an inmate at the Thunder Bay District Jail has prompted several investigations, according to a spokesperson with the Ministry of the Solicitor General.

In an emailed statement, spokesperson Kristy Denette confirmed an inmate died while in custody on Monday, June 1.

“When a death occurs in a correctional facility, a number of investigations take place,” Denette said. “The office of the chief coroner conducts a death investigation to determine cause and manner of death.”

The ministry will also be conducting a mandatory internal investigation to determine if all policies and procedures were followed with respect to the care and custody of the deceased, Denette added.

“The local police conduct an investigation to determine if the death was due to any criminal activity,” she said.

If the coroner’s investigation determines that the death was not due to natural causes, a mandatory inquest will be called to examined circumstances, the statement said.

No other information is available at this time, Denette said.
