THUNDER BAY -- Making sure kids grow up happy and healthy is the entire community's responsibility, local child welfare agencies say.

To remind people, Dilico Anishinabek Family care and the Children's Aid Society of the District of Thunder Bay launched the StepUP campaign Friday morning in conjunction with national Child Abuse Prevention Abuse.

"To really focus on it and give that reminder to everybody," CAS local acting director Gail Quirion.

"If we see a child that we think might be at risk. To ensure that we're doing something about it because it's easy sometimes I think to get a little complacent or not to want to take that final step perhaps of reporting something that you're concerned about."

Dilico child welfare director Carmela Magbanua agreed.

"We together as a community have that role," she said.

That includes children as well. That's why the organizations chose to launch the campaign at St. Ann School. Kids need to be able to speak to adults when they're concerned for themselves or someone else.

"So they know that they can speak to people they can trust," she said.

The campaign includes Go Purple for Prevention Day Oct. 22, a Facebook page and other social media activities throughout the month.
