January was mild, but no record-setter

Thunder Bay's relatively balmy January was much milder than normal, but well off the all-time record.

A lengthy stretch of mild weather in Thunder Bay led to city residents enjoying one of the highest average temperature for January in years.

Environment Canada data shows that the average temperature was minus 10.3 C.

That is significantly milder than the long-term average for January, which is minus 14.8 C.

Meteorologist Jeff Coulson pointed out, however, that it falls far short of the all-time record, established over 70 years ago.

The mark was set in 1944, with an average January temperature of minus 7.0 C.
