THUNDER BAY – There are still opportunities for students searching for summer employment

While they may not be the most glamorous positions, YES Employment marketing and communications manager Sharon Kovacic on Monday said many of the available jobs include traditional seasonal work such as landscaping, recreation and working with children.

“We still do have some job postings and some employers who are coming to us to fill positions,” Kovacic said. “There are a lot of local employers that have small landscaping and lawn care businesses so those are a lot of the jobs.”

Another sector seeking extra bodies is banquet serving as wedding season is in full swing.

The summer months are the busiest time for both high school and postsecondary students who are looking to make some money by picking up a job.

But the employers depend on the labour just as much as the students depend on the money.

“If you took students out of the equation there should surely be an employment shortage,” she said.

“Students count on those jobs and employers are counting on those students to come in and fill the jobs.”

Kovacic expects close to 700 students to work with the employment services agency to find a job.
