Great Bloomers are making themselves heard in the Canadian indie rock scene.
Not hurting the five-piece roots rock band is the fact they recently signed with Toronto-based Dine Alone Records.
The band, hailing from Toronto themselves, is now on a label with the likes of City and Colour, Tokyo Police Club and Hot Hot Heat.
Also on the label are Saskatoon’s Library Voices and west coasters Yukon Blonde, both of which have been rising in popularity thanks to steady touring and years of hard work.
Great Bloomers hope to tap into that same success by touring with both Library Voices and Yukon Blonde this spring; the trio of acts stops at Crocks in Thunder Bay on April 18.
“They’re all really good friends of ours as well,” said Bloomers’ frontman Lowell Sostomi. “It feels really good to be touring with great bands and great people.”
For their first record Speak of Trouble, released in 2009, Great Bloomers were signed with Maple Music. Sostomi said the team at Dine Alone is amazing and the label is working with all of the bands they’re fans of right now.
“We’ve seen the fruits of their labour. I think we’re working with the best possible people we could be working with,” he said.
Since of Speak of Trouble was released, the band’s lineup has almost completely changed over. Sostomi is the lone remaining member.
Currently Great Bloomers is made up of Sostomi, Adrian Cook, Anthony McKnight, Tim Moxam and Kyle Watt.
With the turnover, the band’s sound has also seen a drastic change.
“The new record to us feels like it’s grown quite a bit in terms of sound,” Sostomi said. “We feel like we’ve really sort of honed in on something new and something really different.”
After finishing up this spring tour, Great Bloomers will return home, put the finishing touches on their sophomore album to release it this fall.
“We’re going to tour like crazy,” said Sostomi. “That’s the plan.”
