THUNDER BAY – A man who assaulted a loss prevention officer earlier this month was sentenced on Wednesday for various charges.
Patrick Wood, 28, pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Ontario provincial court to one count of theft under $5,000, one count of mischief under $5,000, assault and two counts of failing to comply with a court order.
In January, police were called to a domestic report at a residence where Wood broke the window of his ex-partner’s mother’s house, which resulted in several hundred dollars in damages, Crown counsel Gordon Fillmore said.
In a separate matter, police were dispatched to a local Walmart this month to arrest a female and male who were observed shoplifting by a loss prevention officer. According to Fillmore, a physical interaction took place between Wood and the loss prevention officer which resulted in Wood swinging his fists and punching the employee in the side of the face.
Court heard Wood grew up in a home where he witnessed violence constantly, according to his lawyer, Sherry Abotossaway.
Crown and defence counsel presented a joint submission for Wood, which credited him for 18 days of pre-sentence custody on an enhanced basis.
The joint submission was endorsed by Justice Elaine Burton who also gave Wood an 18-month probation period which prevents him from entering the Walmart on Memorial Avenue.
He is also required to pay back the amount he caused in damages to the window.
