The manslaughter trial for a Summer Beaver First Nations man began Monday in Thunder Bay.

The trial for Kesley Jacob, 35, officially began at the Superior Court of Justice after a morning jury selection. The trial is expected to last two weeks.

Jacob faces the manslaughter charge in connection with the death of 53-year-old Barney Beaver from Webequie First Nation.

Beaver died in a hospital, one week after a violent incident in a room at the Victoria Inn on Dec. 17, 2011.

Jacob was originally charged with aggravated assault, but the case became a homicide after the victim’s death.

City Police have previously said the two men knew each other, and that alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Jacob is currently free on bail.

None of the charges the accused faces have been proven in court.
