THUNDER BAY - Jury selection in the Brayden Bushby second-degree murder trial is expected to begin in early October.

Bushby is accused of killing Barbara Kentner, 34, after allegedly throwing a metal trailer hitch from a moving vehicle that struck Kentner in the abdomen in January 2017.

Kentner later died in hospital in July 2017.

Bushby was initially charged with aggravated assault but following a review of the case by Crown counsel and the Thunder Bay Police Service with assistance from the Regional Coroner’s Office, he was later charged with second-degree murder.

On Monday, June 22, defence counsel George Joseph and Ryan Green who jointly represent Bushby appeared in a Superior Court of Justice courtroom by audio with Justice Helen Pierce to schedule Bushby’s three-week trial for the fall.

The trial was first scheduled to open in January but was pushed to April as counsel for Bushby was awaiting a decision from the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Due to COVID-19, the trial was once again pushed back after the Ontario Superior Court of Justice temporarily halted almost all operations including upcoming jury trials to limit the spread of the virus.

Jury selection for the trial is expected to last three days beginning Oct. 5 with the trial expected to last three weeks.

Bushby has pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder charge.
