Kayaker dies in weekend incident

The body of 72-year-old Robert Sare of Shuniah was recovered late Sunday night after his kayak rolled and he did not resurface.

NIPIGON, Ont. – The body of a missing kayaker has been recovered by the Ontario Provincial Police underwater search and recovery unit.

In a release issued on Tuesday, police say 72-year-old Robert Sare of Shuniah, Ont. was kayaking on Saturday on the Jackpine River about eight kilometres north of Highway 17 when a witness saw him become submerged and trapped in rocks within the rapids.

He did not resurface.

Police received a distress call on an emergency locator beacon and also called in the northwest region emergency response team and the OPP aviation services helicopter to conduct the search.

The body was recovered at about 9 p.m. on Sunday.
