Thunder Bay Police Service Media Release
Halloween Safety
Halloween is here again and of course this means there will be a number of excited ghosts, goblins and of course zombies taking over the streets of Thunder Bay on Saturday night. The Thunder Bay Police want to encourage parents to start planning for a safe Halloween. The following tips are recommended:
- Wear well-fitting masks (make up is best) , costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls
- Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you
- Hold a flashlight or glow stick while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you
- Always WALK and don't run from house to house
- Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible
- If there is not a sidewalk, always walk on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.
- Do not eat treats before parents have been able to check them
- Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers
- Only visit well-lit houses. Don't stop at dark houses
- Never accept rides from strangers
- Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. It is more fun!
- Plan a route for older children who may go trick or treating without parental supervision. -- Reinforce the importance of staying together as a group and set a specific time for them to return home.
Police would also like to remind motorists to be extra cautious driving on Halloween night. Unfortunately with all of the excitement of the evening, children tend to dart out between parked cars causing a risk to themselves and drivers.
Driving at a lower rate of speed and keeping a watch for children trick or treating will allow for the driver to react to situations for a better outcome.
