Kettle campaign well short of 2019 target

Salvation Army needs to collect about $100,000 between now and Christmas.

THUNDER BAY – The Salvation Army’s Kettle campaign needs a last-minute kick into Christmas.

With about two weeks left to collect, the campaign is still more than $100,000 off its $220,000 goal.

The organization, which provides food and shelter to some of the city’s most vulnerable, said it raised about $6,000 on Giving Tuesday, but could use more volunteers to staff the kettles at a variety of locations between now and Christmas, including the LCBO outlets on Dawson Road and the Thunder Centre, and the city’s three Wal-Mart locations.

On-call volunteers are also needed to fill in on short notice.

To volunteer, phone 345-6492.

Major Lori Mitchell, executive director at the Salvation Army Community and Residential Services, says she’s confident they’ll hit their goal in 2019.

“The people of Thunder Bay are so generous and show that they care by helping us to help people in our community not only at Christmas but also through the coming year,” Mitchell said in a release.

Donations will be accepted until 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve at a variety of locations around the city, including Superstore, Intercity Shopping Centre and Grandview Mall.

Donations can also be made online at www.fillthekettle.com, or by phoning 345-6492.
