Students were skipping for a healthy lifestyle Friday.
Ecole Gron Morgan Public School held the finale for this year’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation Friday afternoon.
Event coordinator Gayle Davis said the students look forward to the afternoon of skipping all year long. They raise pledges throughout the school year and the afternoon out of class is a little bit of a thank you, she aid.
While the money raised goes towards heart and stroke research, the main message to the kids is that fitness is important.
“If you live a healthy lifestyle then hopefully you can avoid this in your life; you won’t have to ever deal with these heart and stroke issues,” Davis said. “We know that once you have a positive outlook towards fitness it will hopefully become part of your lifestyle and that you’ll be moving around instead of being a couch potato or computer potato.”
There were 130 primary students participating in Friday’s jump rope event and the school has raised up to $11,000 in the past.
However, Davis said with economic times the way they are these days, they’re grateful for anything they can raise.
“We know that many people are touched by heart disease,” she said. “This money goes towards research, obviously in the hopes that some day there’s a cure and we don’t have to even have these types of medical issues at all.”
