Kim Churchill says the last five years of his life have been incredibly intense in an amazing way.

He left his parents’ house in Australia after high school and hasn’t really been back, his music making him more successful and bringing him further and further away from home.

“I just kind of enjoy it and try to hold on to it,” the 24-year-old said recently on the road in Quebec.

The first stop he made internationally was Canada, a place he’s fallen in love with as he’s been building a huge fan base and making friends across the country.

“It’s become very important part of me growing into an adult,” he said.

He loves the place so much he recorded his most recent album Silent/Win in British Columbia with producer Warne Livesey, who is a genius, Churchill said, adding even more layers to the “wall of sound” one-man-band Churchill has become known for.

It’s made Churchill want to keep improving his live show. Playing the drum parts with his feet has been a nightmare for the new songs, Churchill said. But it’s worth it to keep giving people a better live show when he performs.

“That in itself is enough of a driving force,” he said.

During his current tour though Churchill found himself on stage with percussionists, keyboardists and even a horn section playing along to his stuff, which was a whole new experience and got him thinking there could be more collaboration for him in the future.

“It was like being introduced to some incredible drug,” he said.

Churchill plays Crock’s next Sunday with Mo Kenny. Tickets are $15.
