THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews early Saturday morning quickly extinguished a kitchen fire at a residence in the 600 block of Norah Street South.

According to a release, firefighters arrived at the scene at about 1 a.m. to find smoke on the main floor. The homeowner was located and taken outside for treatment of smoke inhalation. Two cats were also found and safely removed from the home.

TBFR says the fire was located in the kitchen, but it was detected in its early stages, thanks in part to an alarm system.

A total of six pumpers responded, one aerial ladder and one command unit with the platoon chief.
