THUNDER BAY – A Thunder Bay woman charged with the death of her 11-year-old son is set to appear in court later this month.

Courtney Marie Labelle, 34, faces charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault from the Jan. 1 incident. A boy later identified by police as her son was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to hospital. A second victim, a 59-year-old man, was also taken to hospital with injuries and released shortly afterwards.

Asked if she was aware of the charges against her, Labelle answered "nope."

Legal counsel for the Thunder Bay woman were not present. A future appearance date was set after she conferred with duty counsel. Labelle will appear in court again via video on Feb. 21.

It is unclear what led to the New Year’s Day altercation, or whether drugs or alcohol were involved. Police have said the Victoria Avenue residence where it occurred was not known to them.

“I will go as far as to say that this would not have ever been expected from this place or location,” Det. Insp. John Fennell said following the incident.
