An historic merger between unions meant there were a few less voices singing "Solidarity Forever" in Thunder Bay for the Labour Day Picnic.
"Some of our faithful volunteers aren't here today," Thunder Bay and District Labour Council picnic chair Sandra Snider said.
Unifor, a merger between The Canadian Autoworkers Union and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada now with 300,000 members, held a convention in Toronto over the weekend. And while that did take some local labour leaders out of the day's festivities in Thunder Bay, it didn't stop up to 600 people from heading to the Labour Centre.
The free activities included everything from a barbecue to pony rides.
"At no cost to anybody who comes," Snider said. "We all come together, we all celebrate unions and labour together."
While the picnic was hosted by the labour centre, Snider said anyone in the community was welcome to join in the Labour Day fun. The picnic is also a chance to remind people what unions do, especially the charity work done in the community she said.
