The former Hyde Park School is now an 'inclusive and holistic' education centre.

THUNDER BAY — Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation this week will officially mark the launch of its new school in the Lakehead District Public School Board's former Hyde Park school on Walsh Street.

Details will be released at the grand opening of the Lac des Mille Lacs Education Centre on Wednesday.

The First Nation is leasing the building from the public board.

According to a LDML First Nation newsletter, it's being used for a variety of programs including the Seventh Fire secondary program (high school credits), traditional early years, cultural education program, Indigenous language classes, wellness programming and cultural activities.

The school will host a JK/SK program starting this fall, with Grade 1 to be added next year, gradually extending right up to Grade 8.

Transportation to school will be provided for students from across the city.

An adult education pilot program will launch this autumn as well.

The announcement of the opening describes the school as an inclusive and holistic Indigenous-led education centre that focuses on experiential, innovative and land-based learning activities.

"The Lac des Mille Lacs Education Centre exemplifies what can be achieved through productive and positive partnerships between First Nations, School Boards, and other community activities," the announcement said.

A spokesperson for the Lakehead board said the lease for the building is for the standard term of five years.

The board closed Hyde Park in January 2018.
