THUNDER BAY -- Lakehead University is implementing new protocols to protect students, staff and visitors from the rapid spread of coronavirus.
School officials say in the wake of a pandemic being declared by the World Health Organization, the university is preparing on a number of fronts, including plans to possibly suspend classes and move to other forms of course delivery. Lakehead is also looking at ways for faculty and staff to work remotely.
In a statement released on Wednesday night, the university said for now, there will be no major changes to standard operating procedures, but that could change.
However, as of Thursday, a number of operational changes will be put into effect.
First and foremost, it is banning large gatherings on both its Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses. The school also will not support travel to regions with a Level 3 or higher coronavirus advisory. Approval of all work-related international travel by staff will be considered on a case-by-case basis as is similar travel by Lakehead students.
No cases of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, have been identified in either Thunder Bay or Orillia.
Students,staff and faculty are advised to adhere to health guidelines, including regular hand-washing and not touching one's face. Anyone exhibiting symptoms is being told to contact their local health unit and self-isolate themselves.
