THUNDER BAY — For the third straight year, Lakehead University is receiving global recognition in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

The rankings measure the societal impact of universities, including their contributions in areas such as poverty reduction, addressing inequality issues, climate change and environmental degradation, and promoting peace and justice.

Lakehead is ranked 64th out of 1,406 universities around the world, based on its performance in meeting the United Nations' 17 sustainable development goals.

It is also the highest-ranked university with under 10,000 students.

LU President Moira McPherson said she was ecstatic upon hearing the news.

"Over the last three years, we have strengthened our commitment to social justice and to Indigenous, social and environmental sustainability. This ranking is so very exciting and reflects Lakehead's role in fostering a greater understanding of local and global societal issues and inspiring positive change," she said.

McPherson added that the ranking reflects the world-class research being done by LU faculty, staff and students to address societal challenges.

Lakehead was the only primarily undergraduate school in canada that participated in the rankings this year, and one of 16 Canadian universities to be included in the top 100.

In a news release, the university said it did well because of numerous initiatives it offers to support students facing barriers to education, and because of innovative research done by faculty related to poverty in rural and remote communities in Northwestern Ontario.
