THUNDER BAY — Lakehead University is included in the top half of world university rankings as measured by Times Higher Education magazine.

Lakehead is included in the 601-800 category out of nearly 1,400 universities in 92 countries.

The magazine describes its evaluation as the largest and most diverse university ranking ever produced.

Its table is based on 13 performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

"This is a significant achievement for Lakehead University," says LU President Moira McPherson.

The report puts Lakehead in the same grouping as some larger Canadian schools such as Concordia, Quebec, Regina and Windsor.

LU's placement is above the worldwide median in three of the five measures categories: research, citations and international outlook.

"Our strong global performance in the research category reflects Lakehead's advancement in research and continued recognition as the number one research university in Canada in the primarily undergraduate category," said Andrew Dean, vice-president, Research and Innovation.

This is the first time that Lakehead has participated in the rankings.

According to Times Higher Education, its university ranking is the only one to be independently audited by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers,

This year's report gives the number one spot to Oxford University.

The top Canadian school is the University of Toronto which is ranked 18th.
