THUNDER BAY – Wendy Landry has been tapped as the new president of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association.

The Shuniah mayor was elected to the post Thursday at the organization’s annual general meeting, prevailing over former president and current Red Lake mayor Phil Vinet.

Landry will replace Kenora mayor and outgoing president Dave Canfield, who had been in the role since 2013.

She is in the middle of her first term at the helm of Shuniah after being voted into office in 2014. Before that, she served a single term as a municipal councillor.

Landry served as a vice president on the NOMA board since 2015 as a result of her role as president of the Thunder Bay District Municipal League.

Sioux Lookout mayor Doug Lawrance will join her on the board after being elected executive vice president.

Lawrance, a first-term mayor, joined the NOMA board in 2015 as a Kenora District representative. He defeated Fort Frances town Coun. Ken Perry in the vice president vote.
