Last shot

People are taking one last shot at saving a local golf course. City council will vote on whether to lower green fees at Municipal Golf Course, which would potentially bring enough golfers out to the course to break even and save it from closure.

People are taking one last shot at saving a local golf course.

City council will vote on whether to lower green fees at Municipal Golf Course, which would potentially bring enough golfers out to the course to break even and save it from closure. The golf course’s advisory committee is making the recommendation. Member Jules Tupker and around 10 other golfers were in front of city hall Monday afternoon to rally around the resolution.

“The golfers are still concerned,” Tupker said.

Tupker, one of three public members on the committee, said that some council members of the group, like Coun. Andrew Foulds and Coun. Linda Rydholm, were supportive of the ideas. But mayor Keith Hobbs and Coun. Mark Bentz didn’t seem interested in ways to save the course from closing at the end of this season.

“In fact councillor Bentz basically was against everything that was put forward. There was no intent on his part to try and make this thing work at all,” Tupker said.

If council votes against the recommendation, Tupker said it was at least worth a shot to try and extend the life of the course. He’s hoping a majority of council takes the committee’s advice. If not, he’ll play as many rounds as possible at the course this summer and say goodbye.

“It’s a sad situation,” he said.
