THUNDER BAY -- Lakehead University law students are learning about sustainable development, the duty to consult and community impact in relation to the Ring of Fire.

An annual conference is held for the students, but many others showed up to listen.

A host of industry leaders and professionals spoke at each panel seminar. Organizers are hoping the conference will generate a candid and constructive discussion among the region's stakeholders, as well as how to sustainably develop the Northwest's natural resources.

Panelist David de Launay, deputy minister for Northern Development and Mines said one very important topic was consultation with First Nations.

De Launay said the broadening of peoples' understanding about the issues facing the Ring of Fire's development was key to the conference.
