Lepore, Van Elburg capture high school golf championships

A one-hole playoff was needed to decide boys title.

THUNDER BAY – It took a playoff, but Nathan Lepore is the Superior Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s boys golf champion.

Lepore, who attends St. Ignatius, edged St. Patrick’s Tyler Konopski on the first extra hole, the two golfers tying during regulation with identical 2-over 73s.

St. Ignatius’ Dalla Burgess finished third, one stroke back, while St. Patrick’s Adam Maenpaa was fourth, at 5-over 76.

In the girls championship, Westgate’s Kara Van Elburg earned a two-stroke win over St. Patrick’s Britton Hole, the title won with a 48 over nine holes.

In other varsity action, in senior boys volleyball, Dennis Franklin Cromarty swept Westgate 3-0, while Superior Collegiate edge Hammarskjold 2-1. In the lone junior boys volleyball contest, St. Ignatius downed La Verendrye 2-1.

On the senior girls basketball court, St. Ignatius pounded Superior Collegiate 86-10.

In junior girls play, Hammarskjold beat Superior 63-21 and Westgate downed Dennis Franklin Cromarty 35-20.
