THUNDER BAY -- Employment, Workforce Development and Labour Minister Patty Hajdu is boasting about job creation in Thunder Bay.
Hajdu recently wrote a letter to the editor about the Liberal plan to grow the economy and she says it's helped create 1,600 new jobs in the city since the Trudeau government was elected.
The numbers from Stats Canada show the labour force has indeed grown by 1,600 jobs since October 2015, but there have also been many peaks and valleys in that time.
The workforce was at its highest point in June 2016 but then lost 1,500 jobs over the next six months, before rebounding to slightly more than 60,000 jobs in March.
“One of the things I think is amazing about Thunder Bay is the ongoing diversification of our economy,” Hajdu said.
“There’s a sense of hope and optimism that in fact the economy is starting to fire on all cylinders and that’s exactly what we intended to do when we put forward our ambitious plan.”
Hajdu added it's difficult to know what sectors are adding jobs and employees, but she says the overall numbers are a positive sign.
