QUEEN'S PARK — It's too late for this season, but the Ontario Liberal party is promising to help motorists pay for new winter tires.

Party leader Steven Del Duca says he'll offer a tax credit if the Liberals form the government after next June's election.

He's proposing a refund of $75 per tire to a maximum of $300.

"Combining road safety with making life more affordable is a win-win," Del Duca said in an announcement Tuesday.

"The arrival of winter weather gives us the chance to remind people to make the responsible decision to install winter tires," he added.

The Liberals say the tire credit will not only help protect Ontarians but it will save money by reducing health care and first responder costs, and help reduce auto insurance rates.

A number of insurance companies offer discounts for drivers who equip their vehicles with winter tires.
