DRYDEN, Ont. —  The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is dealing with a dozen new forest fires as a result of recent lightning activity across northwestern Ontario.

Most of the fires discovered Sunday are located in the far north, and many of them are being kept under observation rather than being actively suppressed, because they are small or because they don't pose a serious threat at this time.

The largest of the lightning-sparked fires is 150 hectares in size and is located near Brodeur Lake, west of Pipestone River Provincial Park. It is currently listed as not under control.

The MNRF reports that, following days of reduced fire activity and successful suppression efforts at two larger fires near North Spirit Lake and Sachigo Lake, it is demobilizing resources from both locations.

Crews from northwestern Ontario have also been dispatched to northeastern Ontario to assist in combatting fires in that region.
