A thunderstorm caused power disruptions in the downtown south core Tuesday afternoon.

Lightning struck and snapped a large tree onto a hydro line, cutting out power for around 3,000 Thunder Bay Hydro customers located around Arthur Street and all the way up to the McIntyre River.

Hydro crews cut down the tree and power was restored to all but about 500 customers within an hour.

The outage had a short but significant impact on patients at the Fort William clinic, which started cancelling appointments but then resumed operations when the power came back on.
