THUNDER BAY - Events normally held at the city’s waterfront in summer are going to look very different this year, with celebrations like Canada Day going online only.

The city said in a release issued Thursday afternoon that Canada Day celebrations and Live on the Waterfront will be delivered virtually this summer.

“Our special events like Canada Day and Live on the Waterfront usually see our community coming together to celebrate and showcase culture on a grand scale,” said Louisa Costanzo, supervisor of cultural development and events with the city of Thunder Bay.

“While it will look different this year, the goal is to put together an exciting lineup of talent and activities that residents can watch and do safely from their homes.”

Canada Day at Prince Arthur’s Landing draws thousands of people to enjoy live music and fireworks.

But due to COVID-19 and provincial restrictions in place prohibiting large public gatherings, the city it is looking at new ways to engage the public.

Virtual events will include online performances, follow-along family friend activities, and messages from dignitaries and sponsors.

Limited Marina operations will also begin on May 15 and boaters will be permitted to launch boats only for the purpose of docking and fuel services will be available daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Boaters are reminded that recreational boating is still prohibited, including sitting or socializing on docked boats.

The city said when provincial restrictions are lifted it will be in a better position open the marina to recreational boaters, as well as municipal golf courses.
