Local cop helps thwart potential violent incident at U.S. school

A tip from a resident alerted a Thunder Bay Police Service officer a student at a North Carolina high school might have plans to stab up to 12 students.

THUNDER BAY – A Thunder Bay Police Service officer is being credited with possibly preventing a violent incident at a North Carolina school.

The officer, a member of the criminal investigations branch, acted on information provided by a Thunder Bay resident regarding disturbing communications being made in a web-based chat room, indicating an individual was threatening to commit a violent act at a Union County High School.

According to Charlotte's WSOC-TV, police recovered a variety of weapons, including several knives, a bottle of flammable liquid, fireworks, a dismantled shotgun shells and a "hit list" in a book bag found at the school that included as many as 12 names.

After contacting U.S. Homeland Security, a further investigation led to the arrest of a male teenager from Union County, N.C. The suspect is younger than 16, so his name won't be released.

U.S. authorities are continuing the investigation.
