Local COVID-19 cases up to 60

All five new cases reported as being in self-isolation.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says it’s up to 60 COVID-19 cases in the district.

The health unit on Thursday announced an additional five cases within its catchment area.

Two of the cases, a male and a female in their 30s, are listed as coming from First Nations communities. Gull Bay First Nation on Wednesday announced two more cases the remote northern community, bringing its total to six.

Two other cases, a man in his 40s and a woman in her 70s, are listed as Thunder Bay and surrounding area.

The fifth case announced on Thursday, a man in his 30s, is listed as being related to an outbreak at Lac Des Iles Mine, where 20 employees have been diagnosed with the virus, including several in other districts. 

Three of the other four cases are listed as close contact exposure, while the fifth, the woman in her 70s, is pending.

All five patients are self-isolating.

According to the TBDHU website, there are 1,888 cases in the district to date, with 59 confirmed positive, 37 resolved and 1,716 reported as negative. A total of 117 are still under investigation as o 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Earlier on Thursday the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre reported they are down to just three confirmed cases in hospital and only five patients housed in their COVID-19 isolation ward.
