THUNDER BAY — COVID-19 has claimed the life of another resident of the Thunder Bay district.

The health unit on Tuesday reported the 56th death related to the virus.

At the same time, it announced that the active caseload has fallen to 87, the lowest since Jan. 20.

Nine new cases were reported Tuesday, but 12 previously diagnosed cases have been resolved.

Among the new cases, eight are in the Thunder Bay area, and one is in a First Nation community.

Two of the cases are related to travel outside Northwestern Ontario, two have no known exposure source, three are listed as other close contact cases, and two are still under investigation.

Two of the new cases are identified as Variants of Concern.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit also reported that nearly 40,500 residents of the district have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose so far.

The figure is current as of April 10, according to the latest TBDHU data.

That's an increase of almost 7,000 doses since the previous report, which showed about 33,700 individuals had been given at least one shot as of April 3.

As of April 10, just under 30 per cent of District of Thunder Bay residents eligible to be vaccinated (16 years and over) had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
