In one day, Thunder Bay residents donated more than $20,000 to the Red Cross – the largest single-day amount collected by that organization’s local branch.
The donations came in Tuesday in wake of the recent disaster in Haiti.
Across the country, Canadians have donated nearly $40 million to the national Red Cross fundraising efforts.
Because the money keeps coming in locally, the Red Cross is extending their hours this week to accommodate all of the residents wishing to make a donation. But the fundraising effort extends well beyond the local facility.
As of Tuesday, the Red Cross has raised about $65,000 in Thunder Bay. That doesn’t include online donations. Meanwhile, the local Salvation Army has raised another $4,000 for Haiti relief efforts.
World Vision’s local efforts have resulted in $7,700.
Red Cross spokesman Rob Zuback says the need for monetary donations won't stop anytime soon. He said he hopes Thunder Bay residents keep giving as generously as they have this past week.
