A local man who was instrumental in creating the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre has passed away.
Don Wing, 53, died suddenly Monday morning, confirmed his wife Gwen DuBois-Wing.
The local entrepreneur sat on many boards over the years including being past chair of the Thunder Bay International Airports Authority and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.
Past TBRHSC board chair Keith Jobbitt said he was shocked to hear of Wing’s passing and he’ll always remember him with a smile on his face.
“He always seemed to have that happy look and always positive,” Jobbitt said Monday afternoon.
Jobbitt first met Wing almost 30 years ago when the two worked on getting the NorWest Recreation Centre built but the two worked closely on seeing the hospital project go forward.
As chair of the foundation, Wing led a team that raised more than $19 million for the project.
“It was a fantastic job, a horrendous job when he took it on, but he carried it through; through a lot of thick and thin but he did a great job,” said Jobbitt.
“I admire Don for what he did. A fantastic contribution to our community…He put a lot into making sure we got our new hospital.”
