THUNDER BAY - Two local non-profits received a helping hand courtesy of an annual charitable golf tournament held in the city of Thunder Bay.

The Thunder Bay Real Estate Board donated over $3000 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and Thunder Bay Shelter House on Wednesday. The funds were raised during the Real Estate Board’s annual golf tournament that was held in June.

Diane Erickson, president of the Thunder Bay Real Estate Board, explained that every year the proceeds of the tournament are donated to a different local charity.

“We picked the Heart and Stroke because we know they do good work in the community,” Erickson said. “We picked the Shelter House for the same reason.”

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario received $3,220 and Shelter House received $1000.

Tara Monteith, area manager with the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Thunder Bay, said she is thrilled to be the recipient of the funds from the Real Estate Board tournament.

“The funds that we raise are vital to supporting research and education that we do in the community,” she said.

The money will be used to support university researchers supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, as well as other campaigns such as the Jump Rope for Heart.

Monteith added that it has been a very successful year for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The Door-to-Door campaign in February and June were both a success, Jump Rope for Heart continues to expand in area schools, and the Big Bike Event raised over $150,000.
