THUNDER BAY -- An announcement by the province is being met with some cautious optimism from the president of Thunder Bay Hydro.
Rob Mace said they are still looking at the details in the price reductions presented by the government Thursday morning.
Mace added there won't be a big impact on Thunder Bay Hydro itself, but the global adjustment cost that the province passes to the utility, and the utility passes onto their customers, will be reduced.
That reduction will come into effect May first, but Mace added there will be a cost to hydro users in the long run.
“Hydro rates have been an issue for quite awhile and obviously customers are very concerned,” Mace said.
“It appears the government addressed it. They are reducing Hydro rates, but it appears there is a long-term cost to this.”
Mace said instead of charging the customers right now, they are spreading it out for the future.
“There’s always a trade off when you are looking at that kind of thing, but clearly customers for the short term, I would imagine, will be happy with this decision.”
Mace added there are a number of questions that need to be addressed in regards to hydro pricing regulations, and the legislation behind the province's plan.
