Local libraries witness decade of significant growth

Thunder Bay libraries have seen a 75 per cent increase in the number of people using their services over the last 10 years.

A recent report indicates that the growth in library usage isn’t exclusive to Thunder Bay. More people across the country appear to be using their local libraries more now than they were a decade ago.

Thunder Bay library CEO Barbara Philp said a lot of that is due to people wanting to meet socially, or for group work.

“We have, particularly in Thunder Bay with the new branch that has opened, noticed how the meeting room space has been booked up by people,” Philp said during a phone interview with CKPR Radio.

“We have had poetry meeting, knitters meet in that room as well as kids who are getting together for group work.”

Philp added that the increase is also due to people using online services in the library.
