Local pharmacies feeling drug shortage sting

A national prescription drug shortage is hitting home for patients who use Thunder Bay pharmacies.

A national prescription drug shortage is hitting home for patients who use Thunder Bay pharmacies.

Janzen's Pharmacy owner Brenda Adams said Tuesday that the shortage is affecting everything including Penicillin, other antibiotics and psychiatric medication.

Adams said the problem has been going on for some time, and seems to be getting worse. She said she believes the shortage has been caused by a number of factors, including the Ontario government's reforms that forced a 50 per cent cut in the price of generic drugs back in the spring.

Adams said many patients are being forced to switch prescriptions as a result of the shortage.

She added that the problem could continue to get worse, but that it’s unclear just how long some of these medications will be unavailable.
