THUNDER BAY -- Grade 8 Students from Kingsway  participated in the Hour of Code this week at the GIS lab in Confederation College.

Kingsway Principal Darren Lentz said the participating students learned to use their own GPS data to create maps.

The Hour of Code is a global initiative reaching millions of students across 180 countries.

The objective of the Hour of Code is to give everyone an opportunity to learn computer science in an annual one-hour online workshop. The global initiative hopes to especially reach out to girls and underrepresented minorities.

Launched in 2013 from the success of a Youtube video, twin brothers Hadi and Ali Partovi where approached by more than 15,000 schools for help.

They began as volunteers, but in just a few years they've managed to increase their reach as a full-time organization supporting a worldwide movement.

Through their website code.org, they partner with teachers and school districts to help change government policies pertaining to computer science and its importance in the curriculums.
