THUNDER BAY – This winter’s mostly dry weather made for a rough season for local ski hills but the recent large amounts of snowfall have allowed local skiers to partially make up for lost time.
Daniel Kardas, co-owner of Mount Baldy Ski area said that the snow the region has seen over the past week was amazing for those still hoping to hit the slopes.
“We've been waiting for it all season and it finally came at the end of the season. All I have to say is thanks up there for all this beautiful snow at the end of the season,” he said.
“The last couple of days have been, amazing out here. The people have been enjoying it. It's amazing what snow does; it snows and the whole town shows up, which is awesome.”
People couldn’t wait for the chance to get a few runs in so the Baldy parking lot was full within the first half-hour of the hill opening on Sunday.
“Basically, a couple of weeks ago, you would have seen tumbleweed going down the road and, and now the lineups of the cars and the people are coming and they're enjoying it,” said Kardas.
“It's amazing what [snow] does. It really sparks everyone. When you look outside your, your front door and you see green grass, there's no motivation there to come out to come and ski. Once it snows, boom, everyone's like, hey, let's get out there and enjoy it.”
Kardas said that Mount Baldy plans to remain open for at least a couple more weeks as long as the snow sticks around and conditions continue to be favourable.
