THUNDER BAY -- Yvan Brochu is still working to get his business off the ground.

Less than two years ago Brochu created YME Welding Enterprise, a welding and fabrication shop that specializes in forestry, mining and road maintenance industries as well as other commercial and residential projects.

It was announced on Friday that YME, which currently employs three people, received $125,000 from the province’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

In addition to purchasing new equipment, Brochu intends to use the funding to increase the size of his operation. He also wants to hire workers who are new to the field.

“Later on I plan on expanding and creating more jobs,” he said.

“You have to get them out there to learn the trades and to learn it properly and safely. You have to give them a chance…If people don’t give these young people a chance there won’t be any more out in the field.”

Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro said was on hand to make the announcement and said YME is filling an industry void.

In such a short time the company’s reach is extending beyond the city.

“I think what was exciting for me about the announcement was Yvan telling me he is drawing in business from Kenora, Dryden and east of Thunder Bay. He really is growing something here in the community,” Mauro said.

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund annually contributes $100 million towards businesses and the regional economy.
