Northwestern Ontario Writers Workshop release
THUNDER BAY -- Every day we consume countless words of information, from news articles, to advertisements, to social media posts. Behind all those words is a writer, and with the growing need for information, there is a growing need for writers.
The Northwestern Ontario Writers Workshop is pleased to provide writers with the skills and tools they need to enter the freelance market with its latest workshop - Side Gig: How to Make Money from your Freelance Writing.
Graham Strong and Bonnie Schiedel, two freelance writers who have successfully based their businesses in Thunder Bay, are leading the workshop.
“The business of writing is one of the most difficult things for new freelancers breaking in,” said Strong. “Bonnie and I will be teaching the basics about where to find markets, how to interact with clients, and most importantly how to make money from your writing side gig.”
Strong is a full-time freelance writer, specializing in marketing, journalism, and ghostwriting. His work has been published in the Sudbury Mining Solutions Journal, the Northern Ontario Medical Journal, and he has written for the Canadian Press.
Schiedel, a former editor of Chatelaine, is the founder of North Star Writing, working with businesses and magazines to write website copy, articles, and blog posts. Schiedel’s work covers everything from food and travel to eco-living and she has been published in Today’s Parent, Best Health, NorthernOntario Travel, and Canadian Living. She also runs the local website tbaywithkids.ca.
“Graham and I have worked hard to distill our 30 plus years of experience into a 90-minute workshop that covers the ins and outs of running a freelance writing business,” Schiedel said. “We want to cover a variety of approaches that work for us, both old school and new trends.”
