Long-lasting blaze engulfs Murillo landfill

Fifteen fire personnel were used to fight the fire which lasted for over four hours

MURILLO, Ont. - A fire at a Murillo landfill left firefighters fighting the blaze for the majority of the evening on Saturday.

Fire crews were notified of a fire at approximately 5 p.m., and were still attempting to put out flames approximately four hours after arrival.

Shane Zimmer, captain of the Oliver Paipoonge Fire Department, said landfill attendants notified officials of a fire in the woodpile area, which spread into the pile of tires, and eventually into the tree line.

"The fire is under control. It's just a hot spot in the tree lines. So we're in the process of using forestry (equipment)

The flames which engulfed the tree line were the source of the prolonged blaze.

Firefighters continued to battle the flames as of 9 p.m.

Roughly 15 firefighters from the Oliver Paipoonge Service, and Conmee Fire Department helped contain the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

The estimated cost of the damage is unknown.
